01. Compare and decide
Two provinces side by side, and the rule on where a candidate can sit the test.
Can you sit the test in another province?
- Theory
- The theory exam can be sat at any Ufficio Motorizzazione Civile (UMC), not only the one where the candidate lives.
- Neighbouring province
- A neighbouring province is the simplest choice and needs no extra paperwork.
- Province further away
- Other provinces need a written request with work, study or logistical reasons; the office director decides.
- Practical
- The practical test is normally sat at the same office where the theory was passed.
- Residence
- Residence must be genuine. For EU citizens the normal residence is at least 185 days a year; six months of study in Italy counts as residence.
- Waiting times
- No official per-province waiting times are published. In 2022 the MIT reported national averages of 40 days for theory and 68 for the practical.

03. Practise like the real exam
Thirty statements, twenty minutes, at most three mistakes.
- Thirty true or false statements, as on the real exam.
- Twenty minutes on the clock.
- Passing means no more than three mistakes.
- Every mistake opens the rule that explains it. A short retest closes the session.
