How much does the licence B cost in 2026?
The amounts come from the fee schedule published on Portale dell'Automobilista. They are the same for driving-school pupils and private candidates, and are paid through PagoPA. The N067 payment must be made out to the person sitting the exam, and the receipt with its IUV code is attached to the application. The schedule notes that in Sicily, Friuli Venezia Giulia and the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano, applicants should ask the local Motorizzazione office.
| Operation | Code | Fees | Stamp duty | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Theory exam | N067 | 26.40 € | 16.00 € | 42.40 € |
| Practical exam | N019 | 0.00 € | 16.00 € | 16.00 € |
| Total | 26.40 € | 32.00 € | 58.40 € |
Which costs are fixed and which are not?
Anything outside the fee schedule has a free or local price. No official source gives a national amount for these items, so this page quotes no figures for them.
| Item | Depends on | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Certificato anamnestico | Family doctor | The doctor's practice |
| Medical fitness certificate | ASL, authorised doctor or local medical commission | When booking |
| Passport-size photographs | Photographer or booth | Motorizzazione office for the number required |
| Driving-school enrolment and theory | Each school | Written quote |
| Eight mandatory hours and extra lessons | Each school | Written quote, hourly price |
| Exam vehicle (private candidate) | Driving school or dual-control vehicle | Motorizzazione and driving school |
How much is the medical certificate and how long is it valid?
The medical route has two steps. First the family doctor issues the certificato anamnestico, which on its own is not enough to apply. Then a doctor authorised under article 119 of the Codice della Strada (at the ASL or at consultancy offices and driving schools) issues the fitness certificate. Motorizzazione instructions published on Portale dell'Automobilista require a certificate dated no more than three months earlier; if the local medical commission issues it, the limit is six months. The price depends on the provider and the region.
How much do the mandatory driving hours cost?
| Module | Hours | Content |
|---|---|---|
| A | 2 | Vehicle, driver assistance systems (ADAS), emergencies |
| B | 3 | Urban driving |
| C | 2 | Motorway or extra-urban roads |
| D | 1 | Night driving |
| Total | 8 | Maximum 2 hours per day |
The hours must be taken with a licensed instructor, by private candidates too. When comparing a driving school with the private route it is the first price to ask for, because each school sets its own hourly rate. The modules are explained in the guide to mandatory driving lessons for the licence B. The decree is published in Gazzetta Ufficiale no. 297 of 23 December 2025. Under article 6, it takes effect when the decreto dirigenziale on the platform certifying the hours enters into force; the date of 22 April 2026 appears in trade press but was not found in a ministerial circular consulted for this page, so it should be confirmed with the driving school.
What should you ask a driving school before signing?
Driving-school prices vary by city and by school, and no official price list exists. To compare offers, ask for a written quote that answers at least these points.
- What is included: enrolment, theory classes, study materials, paperwork.
- How many driving lessons are included, whether they cover the eight mandatory hours and the price of each extra lesson.
- Exam payments: whether the 42.40 euro for theory and 16.00 euro for the practical are included or paid separately.
- Cost of a retake, for theory and for the practical, including use of the vehicle.
- Cost of a new application if the foglio rosa expires or the attempts run out.
Keeping a copy of the contract and of the PagoPA receipts makes it possible to check the amounts actually paid.
How much does a private candidate save?
Driving school
- Enrolment and classroom theory
- Eight mandatory driving hours with an instructor
- Paperwork and bookings handled
- Price set by each school
Private candidate
- No driving-school enrolment fee
- Self-study for theory
- Application, payments and appointments handled alone
- Eight mandatory hours with a licensed instructor, paid anyway
A private candidate avoids the enrolment fee and theory classes, but still pays the exam fees, the medical certificate and the eight hours with a licensed instructor. The real saving depends on the price of instructor hours in the local area and on the time available to handle the paperwork at the counter.
How much does failing cost?
The licence application is valid for six months and allows two theory attempts at least one month apart. The foglio rosa is valid for twelve months and allows three practical attempts, the first not before one month from issue. Each extra attempt costs mostly in additional lessons and any driving-school charges. Which fee-schedule payments must be repeated for each exam should be confirmed with Motorizzazione or the driving school, because the schedule gives the amount per operation, not the rule on retakes.
What happens if...?
If a candidate in Palermo fails theory twice within the six months, the application lapses and she must file a new one (article 122, paragraph 1, of the Codice della Strada), with a new N067 payment of 42.40 euro (in Sicily the amount should be confirmed with the local office) and a medical certificate that is still valid. The lost time weighs more than the payments.
If a private candidate in Bologna skips the driving school to save money, he pays no enrolment or theory classes, but still pays 42.40 euro for theory (tariff N067) and 16.00 euro for the practical (tariff N019), as the MIT page on obtaining licence B states, pays for the medical certificate and buys the eight mandatory hours from a driving school. Before deciding he compares the price of those hours with a full package.
If a young man in Turin fails the practical three times, the foglio rosa allows no further attempts (article 121, paragraph 11, of the Codice della Strada): a new application and a new theory exam are needed, so the fee-schedule payments are due again, along with whatever lessons the driving school considers necessary.
Which mistakes make it cost more?
- Doing the medical too early: a certificate from an authorised doctor older than three months at application must be redone.
- Paying PagoPA with the wrong details: the N067 payment must be in the candidate's name.
- Signing a package without reading the exclusions: retakes and extra lessons are often extra.
- Letting the foglio rosa expire: a new application costs more than a few extra lessons booked in time.
Which costs come after the licence?
After the licence is issued other costs follow: RCA motor insurance, the regional car tax (bollo auto) and the vehicle inspection (first at four years from registration, then every two years). For the first three years the new-driver limits also apply: power up to 75 kW/t and 105 kW for M1 cars, and a zero blood alcohol limit (a rule that article 186-bis also applies to drivers under 21).
What are the most common questions about the licence B cost?
How much does the Italian driving licence B cost in total?
There is no single figure. The only amounts set by the state total 58.40 euro: 42.40 euro for the theory exam (26.40 euro in fees plus 16.00 euro stamp duty, code N067) and 16.00 euro stamp duty for the practical exam (code N019), paid through PagoPA.

On top of these come the medical certificate, photographs and the cost of a driving school or of instructor lessons, which varies by city and by school and has no official price list.
What are the mandatory state fees?
For the theory exam (code N067) 26.40 euro in fees and 16.00 euro stamp duty, 42.40 euro in total. For the practical exam (code N019) 16.00 euro stamp duty. Payment is through PagoPA. In Sicily, Friuli Venezia Giulia and the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano the fee schedule refers applicants to the local Motorizzazione offices.
How much is the medical visit for the licence?
Portale dell'Automobilista publishes no single national fee: the price depends on the provider (ASL, authorised doctor, local medical commission) and should be asked when booking. The family doctor first issues the certificato anamnestico, which may carry its own charge.
Can I get the licence B as a private candidate?
Yes. A private candidate pays no driving-school enrolment or theory classes and applies directly to Motorizzazione. The eight driving hours with a licensed instructor required by ministerial decree 294 of 17 November 2025 also apply to private candidates, so part of the driving-school cost remains.
How much does a driving-school package cost?
There is no official price list and prices vary by city and by school. To compare offers, ask for a written quote stating what is included, how many driving lessons, whether exam payments are included, the cost of a retake and the cost of a new application if the foglio rosa expires.
How many mandatory driving hours are there?
Eight hours in four modules (A 2 hours, B 3, C 2, D 1), at most 2 hours per day. This is set by MIT decree no. 294 of 17 November 2025 (Gazzetta Ufficiale no. 297 of 23 December 2025). Module A covers the vehicle, ADAS and emergencies, B urban driving, C motorway and extra-urban roads, D night driving.

The operational start date of 22 April 2026 is reported by trade press: confirm it with the driving school or Motorizzazione.
What happens if I fail?
The application is valid for six months and allows two theory attempts at least one month apart. The foglio rosa is valid for twelve months and allows three practical attempts. The fee schedule gives the amount per exam operation; which payments must be repeated for a retake should be confirmed with Motorizzazione or the driving school.
What happens if the foglio rosa expires before the practical?
Once the twelve months have passed, or the three attempts are used, a new application with a new theory exam is needed. The fee-schedule payments for the new application are due again and, as a rule, a new medical certificate if the previous one is no longer valid.
Are the PagoPA payments included in the driving-school price?
It depends on the contract. Some schools pay and include them, others charge them separately. The written quote should say so explicitly, and the PagoPA receipts should be kept.
