How to book the Italian driving test

How is the Italian driving test booked, step by step?

Booking is not a single action. It has two stages: first the application, which opens the file, then the choice of exam session. In order:

1. Medical check with an authorised doctor, who issues the fitness certificate (it can also be digital).
2. PagoPA payment of tariff N067, 26.40 euros in fees and 16.00 euros in stamp duty, through the Portale dell'Automobilista, the IO app or an authorised payment point.
3. Application (form TT 2112) at the Motorizzazione Civile office. An independent candidate takes it to the counter, often by appointment; a driving school does it on the student's behalf.
4. Reference number and date: the office registers the application. From that day the six months for two theory attempts begin.
5. Booking the theory session, online or at the counter depending on the office.
6. After theory: the foglio rosa, compulsory lessons, then booking the practical test with tariff N019.

How does online booking on the Portale dell'Automobilista work?

The procedure varies by office. One concrete example is the Bologna Motorizzazione, which publishes its instructions on the Portale dell'Automobilista. The candidate logs in with SPID, opens the "Sistema di Prenotazione all'Ufficio Motorizzazione" and books a counter appointment to register the licence application. With the reference number and date, a second booking is made in the theory test category, attaching the front page of form TT 2112 showing the reference. The time chosen online is only indicative: in Bologna candidates go to the exam room fifteen minutes before their slot. Other offices use different procedures, so the notice for the local office is worth reading.

Which documents are needed for the licence application?

The minimum age for category B is 18. Holders of an A1, A2, A or B1 licence take only the practical test, but still pay tariff N067.

How much does it cost to book the Italian driving test?

There are two public charges, set by the Ministry. The application requires tariff N067 (26.40 euros in fees and 16.00 euros in stamp duty, 42.40 euros in total). Booking the practical test requires tariff N019 (16.00 euros in stamp duty). Sicily, Valle d'Aosta, Trentino Alto Adige and Friuli Venezia Giulia have specific tariffs listed by the MIT.

Everything else has no national price. The medical, the photos and above all the driving school package vary between cities and between schools, so this page gives no figures for them.

Is a driving school better than applying independently?

Both routes lead to the same exam, with different workloads. A driving school lodges the file, books sessions, prepares for theory and provides a dual control car. An independent candidate handles the application, payments and appointments alone. One thing does not change: the compulsory lessons on motorways or extra urban roads and at night are taken at a driving school either way (article 122, paragraph 5-bis, of the Codice della Strada).

How long is the wait between application and theory test?

There is no national waiting time. It depends on the office calendar, the number of candidates and the examiners available. The fixed constraint is the other one: the application lasts six months from the day it is lodged, and both attempts must fit in that window, at least one month apart. When can the practical test be booked?

After the foglio rosa. The practical test cannot take place until one month after issue, and booking requires the tariff N019 receipt and the certificate for the compulsory lessons. The MIT page states at least 6 hours; ministerial decree no. 294 of 2025 raises this to 8, with effect tied to a later implementing decree. The foglio rosa lasts twelve months and gives three attempts, with at least one month between a failed test and the next. Details are in the guide to the foglio rosa.

If a candidate in Lecce asks to book the practical test three days before the session, the booking is not accepted, because article 121, paragraph 11, of the Codice della Strada requires it by the fifth day before the test.

What happens if a booking is badly timed?

If an independent candidate in Bologna applies on 2 April and fails his first theory session, booked for mid September, the second attempt cannot come before mid October, when the application has already expired: he must pay tariff N067 again and file a new application (article 122, paragraph 1, and article 121, paragraph 10, of the Codice della Strada).

If a candidate in Naples has her medical with a single doctor in January and applies in May, the counter rejects the certificate, because the MIT page on obtaining licence B accepts it only if it is less than three months old. She has to repeat the medical before the application can be registered.

If a candidate in Padua passes theory and wants the practical test three weeks later, he cannot take it, because article 121 of the Codice della Strada requires one month to pass after the foglio rosa is issued. Meanwhile he completes the compulsory lessons, without which the test cannot be booked.

What are the most common booking mistakes?

• Paying a PagoPA tariff other than N067, or paying the national tariff for an office in a region with specific tariffs.
• Bringing a medical certificate older than the three or six month limit.
• Forgetting to attach the TT 2112 front page with the reference number to the online booking.
• Leaving the first theory session too close to the end of the six months.
