Revisione auto: Italian vehicle inspection dates, costs and results

An Italian car has its first inspection (revisione) 4 years after registration and then every 2 years, under article 80 of the Highway Code. At authorised centres it costs 79.02 euro, ACI reports. Driving with an expired inspection is fined 173 to 694 euro.

How often must the inspection be done?

The deadline is a month, not a day. A car first registered on 18 June 2022 needs its first inspection by 30 June 2026; if it is done on 3 June, the next one is due by 30 June 2028. Going a few weeks early within the same month does not change the calendar.
How much does it cost and where is it done?
At authorised private centres the fee is 79.02 euro, VAT and Motorizzazione fees included, according to ACI. The fee was 66.88 euro until 2021. In February 2025 ACI reported an amendment to raise it to 88.20 euro from 2026: check the fee displayed by the centre before booking, because the amount charged depends on the implementing decree.
- Authorised inspection centres: private garages licensed by the Motorizzazione, booked directly.
- Motorizzazione Civile offices: form TT2100, booked through the Portale dell'Automobilista, pagoPA payment of fee N046 at 45 euro, according to MIT.
Bring the registration document (Documento Unico or carta di circolazione). The tester checks, among other things, brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, lights, seat belts, visibility, exhaust emissions and warning lights.
What do the results regolare, ripetere and sospeso mean?

For Highway Code fines, article 202 generally allows a 30% discount when payment is made within 5 days of the notice, except in the cases the rule excludes. The exact amount and any reduction are printed on the fine notice.
What happens in common real cases?
If an office worker in Bari with a car first registered in June 2022 is stopped in July 2026 without the first inspection, which was due by 30 June 2026, she is fined 173 to 694 euro and the car is suspended from use until inspected, allowed only to drive to the test centre or the Motorizzazione (article 80, paragraph 14, of the Codice della Strada).
If a sales agent in Florence gets a "ripetere" result for a misaligned dipped headlight, he has to get it fixed and present the car again within one month, as the MIT states for this result; after that month the car cannot be driven without a new pass.
If a tradesman in Palermo receives a "sospeso" result for ineffective brakes and keeps using the van for work, a roadside check exposes him to 1,998 to 7,993 euro and 90 days of administrative impoundment, with confiscation for a repeat offence (article 80, paragraph 14, of the Codice della Strada).
Which mistakes should I avoid?
- Counting 4 years from the purchase of a used car: first registration is what counts.
- Assuming a month of grace: the fine applies from the first day of the month after the due month.
- Paying above the fee without asking for a breakdown: at authorised centres the fee is set at ministerial level.
- Ignoring dashboard warning lights: they are among the tester's checks.
