Italian AM licence: what you can ride at 14, exams and fees

This site has no AM quiz: the questions in the patente B quiz are written for category B. This guide summarises the AM rules from official sources, named sentence by sentence.

What can you ride with an AM licence?

The MIT page, last modified on 13 November 2025, splits the vehicles into two groups. Every limit applies at once, not just one of them.

The MIT separates spark ignition engines (petrol, up to 50 cc) from compression ignition engines (diesel, up to 500 cc). The categories themselves are those of article 116 of the Codice della Strada; the comparison with A1, B1 and B is in the guide to licence categories.

Example. A 50 cc scooter approved for 45 km/h falls under AM. A 125 cc scooter does not: it needs at least A1, covered in the guide to the A1, A2 and A motorcycle licences.

At what age, and when can you carry a passenger?

The minimum age is 14. According to the MIT page on the AM licence, a passenger may be carried only if the vehicle is approved for two and the rider is at least 16. The registration document states whether the vehicle is approved for a passenger.

Abroad the rule changes. The MIT states that AM is valid for mopeds and light quadricycles in the European Union from the age of 16, except in the individual states that recognise the limit of 14.

Example. A girl in Lecce gets her AM licence at 14 and a half. She can ride her 50 cc to school alone. To carry her sister she has to wait until 16 and use a moped approved for two. For a scooter trip to France at 15 she first needs to check whether that country accepts AM at 14.

How do the AM exams work?

There are two exams, a theory test and a practical riding test. The MIT page sets the attempts:

1. Theory: 2 attempts within 6 months of the application.
2. Foglio rosa: issued only after the theory pass.
3. Riding: 3 attempts within 11 months, counted from the month after the theory pass.

The number of questions, the time and the errors allowed in the AM theory test are not stated on the MIT page consulted, which refers to circular prot. 28821 of 19 September 2019. This site does not publish those values until it has read them in an official source. The driving school or the Motorizzazione office confirms them at application. The category B format, 30 statements in 20 minutes with at most 3 errors, is explained in the guide how the theory exam works and should not be assumed for AM.

Example. A boy in Verona applies on 10 March. He has until 10 September to pass the theory test in no more than two attempts. If he passes on 20 April he receives the foglio rosa and, from the following month, has eleven months and three attempts for the riding test. The foglio rosa rules are in the foglio rosa guide.

How do you apply for the AM licence?

The application goes to the Motorizzazione Civile office on form TT 2112, at the counter or online on the Portale dell'Automobilista. The MIT lists these documents:

• the PagoPA receipt for the theory exam fee;
• a valid identity document shown and photocopied; for a minor, also that of a parent or guardian;
• the medical certificate receipt, no older than 3 months from a single doctor or 6 months from the local medical board (see the medical guide);
• a photocopy of the tax code or health card.

For a minor the TT 2112 form is also signed by the parent or guardian. The notes box states the vehicle for the practical test (two wheeled moped, three wheeled moped or light quadricycle) and its gearbox. The MIT says this choice can still be changed up to the booking of the riding test.

How much does the AM licence cost at the Motorizzazione?

There are three ministry fees, paid through PagoPA, according to the MIT AM page:

In Sicily, Valle d'Aosta and the provinces of Trentino Alto Adige and Friuli Venezia Giulia the MIT refers to specific fees. The medical, any driving school and the test vehicle have no price set by the MIT, so none is given here. For category B the sums are in how much the patente B costs.

Which vehicle is used for the practical test?

The MIT accepts two or three wheeled mopeds and light quadricycles, provided they are approved to carry a passenger besides the rider, with a manual or automatic gearbox. The candidate chooses the type of vehicle when booking the test.

Example. A 14 year old in Cagliari who will drive a microcar enters a light quadricycle and its gearbox on form TT 2112. If he later decides to take the test on a two wheeled moped, he says so by the time the riding test is booked.

What are the most common mistakes?

• Carrying a friend before 16, or on a moped approved for one person.
• Assuming a 125 cc scooter falls under AM: it needs A1.
• Assuming the category B quiz format applies to the AM theory test without checking.
• Letting the six theory months or the eleven foglio rosa months run out.
• Riding abroad on AM at 14 or 15 without checking that country's rules.
